A Morning Pause for Grace, Humility, and Care
Location: Front Steps of Capitol Hill UMC
Who It’s For: Neighbors, commuters, dog walkers, passersby, and anyone seeking a quiet moment of connection during Holy Week
In the middle of Holy Week, we take our faith out onto the sidewalk to share a simple act of care with our neighborhood.
The word "Maundy" comes from the Latin word for commandment. On the night before he died, Jesus shared a final meal with his closest friends, knelt down with a basin of water and a towel to wash their dusty feet, and gave them a new commandment: "Love one another as I have loved you."
Between 8 AM and 10 AM, our pastor and church leaders will be out on the front steps of CHUMC with basins of warm water and fresh towels to offer hand washing or foot washing and a brief prayer of blessing to anyone passing by.
What to Expect
🤲 Hand Washing or Foot Washing—Your Choice: We know taking off your shoes on a morning commute isn't always practical! Whether you choose to pause for a quick hand washing or sit down for a traditional foot washing, both are equally meaningful expressions of grace.
💧 A Moment to Be Cared For: In a city that constantly asks us to produce, rush, and achieve, allowing someone to gently pour warm water over your hands or feet is a grounding reminder that you are loved, valued, and worthy of care just as you are.
🚶 Come As You Are: There is no dress code and no preparation needed.
